@UWFFootball November 16

My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: University of West Florida

Location: Pensacola FL

The University of West Florida began playing football in 2016. This year in their second year they are going to the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs. That is a record that used to be held at UNC Pembroke going to the NCAA Playoffs in three years of starting a program.

The Head Football Coach at UWF is Pete Shinnick and this is not the first time he has led a start-up NCAA Division II Football team to the playoffs. He did in it in 2009 at UNC Pembroke in his third year. Very proud of Pete and his UWF team and coaches.

Photos of Pete’s time at UNC Pembroke including a big win at UNC Charlotte in UNCC inaugural season. Photo on left is of Doug Fluite stopping in at a 2009 UNCP spring football practice with then UNCP Chancellor Allen Meadors. Photo on right is Pete’s family.

In 1963 the Florida Legislature allocated funding to develop the University of West Florida, which became the sixth university in the State University System of Florida. Construction began in 1965 and the first classes were held in 1967.

Today they have an enrollment of over 12,000 students including some pretty talented football players. Wishing UWF good luck on Saturday when they play at Wingate in 1st round of NCAA Division II Championship.
