My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: University of Virginia’s College at Wise
Location: Wise VA
Virginia is a State with a lot of geographical diversity. Some of that diversity presented a challenge to the southwest corner of the state as it related to public higher education. Prior to 1954 there were no public colleges located west of Roanoke, VA.
Southwest Virginia is for the most part very rural and mountainous.
So local residents made a case to the University of Virginia for establishing a college in Wise, VA the school opened in 1954 on farm property with 109 full-time students. Two-thirds of those students were Korean War veterans. The school when it opened was called Clinch Valley College.
After opening in 1954 Clinch Valley College continued as a two-year university for several years. As time went on, more and more graduates expressed their preference to stay closer to home to complete their baccalaureate degrees.
In 1966, legislation allowed the school to offer four-year degrees and in 1999, the college name was officially changed to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Today the university has about 2,000 students. Approximately 25% of all degree seeking students participate in men’s and women’s athletic programs in and around campus, including 32% of all first time students. Virginia Wise is a member of NCAA Division II and the Mountain East Conference.
