My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities and today is the last in this series.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”. I have received a lot of feedback on what to do in 2018 and that will get unveiled tomorrow.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: UNC Pembroke
Location: Pembroke NC
The last post of 2017 is an attempt to thank The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNC Pembroke) for having me be part of their family since the 1970’s.
This past year as I have written about 364 other colleges. That experience has caused my appreciation for UNC Pembroke’s uniqueness to increase. I have also learned that the UNC Pembroke history has much in common with many other universities.
One example is having a building on campus named Old Main. I lost count this year the campuses I wrote about that had an Old Main. A few I remember included University of Arizona, University of South Dakota, Duquesne, Gannon, and many others. There is a list at link below:
UNC Pembroke “Old Main” below.
I also came to realize that UNC Pembroke original mission to educate American Indians makes it very unique.
I came to realize that the 7 names UNC Pembroke has had was on the large size but colleges going under multiple name changes is not unique. It seemed that many universities have had 3-4 name changes on average.
I have come to appreciate that UNC Pembroke Football Stadium Grace P. Johnson is only one of three in the country bearing the name of a female. Williams-Brice at USC Columbia and Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia are the other two.
This past year reinforced what a gift it is to work in higher education.
There are a lot of fabulous universities and colleges but there is only one UNC Pembroke. Glad I am part of BraveNation. Happy New Year!
