#Buffet @JohnRancke January 2

I started the Coach4aday blog in 2014 and have done daily posts on one topic for each year. In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and in 2017 it was “Colleges and Universities”.

The one consistent piece of feedback I have received with this blog is the 2015 series on “A Friend of a Friend”. Readers and blog followers said please bring it back. The stats also back that up with the number of views each of those posts received.

So in 2018 two things will happen with the Coach4aday blog; One I plan to collaborate with a friend named John Rancke and revisit some of those 2015 “A Friend of a Friend” posts and do some new ones with a slightly different twist.

In addition John and I will write about things we both are interested which will include basketball, food, people, music, our granddaughters, and great stories.

If you want to follow the blog via email go to the bottom right of the post and click the follow button.

My twitter handle is @coach4aday2 if you want to follow the blog that way.

John’s twitter handle is @JohnRancke if you want to reach out to him.

January 2, 2018 NATIONAL BUFFET DAY by John Rancke

National Buffet Day is observed annually on January 2. Buffets are a popular choice for many when choosing a destination for eating out. Chinese, Country, Italian. Breakfast, and Midnight are all popular adjectives describing the various buffets available today. Somehow the gluttony of bowl games on Jan 1 seems to be the appropriate appetizer for National Buffet Day.

Buffets are a system of serving meals, where food is placed in a public area to be easily viewed and selected, by people serving themselves.

Buffets are useful for feeding large groups of individuals at one time and are offered at a variety of places including hotels, restaurants and conventions.

It is also known as “The Feeding Trough”.  Many a Las Vegas visitor has visited the legendary “All You Can Eat” buffets on the Strip and has expanded their waist size while lightening their money clip.

Everything from lobster to crepes to prime rib to cantelope is available at one low price.

Locally the recently flooded out Fullers BBQ and the very popular Lumber Bridge now defunct Fred Chason’s BBQ served the residents of Robeson County.

Fuller’s on NC 211 and I-95 (exit 20) pre and post Hurricane Matthew October 2016 photos.

Fred Chason’s grandson has taken the family bbq roots to Dunn, Smithfield, Rocky Mount, and Fayetteville and now serves the local favorites under the Fred Chason’s Grandsons Carolina’s Famous Buffet signage.

Fuller’s is serving in Fayetteville until they can return to Lumberton.

The buffet table comes from the Brannvinsbord – Swedish schnapps (shot of alcoholic beverage) table, popular in the 16th century. The smorgasbord table was a gathering place for a pre-dinner drink followed by a large formal dinner. It was usually served on a dining room buffet table.

The more modern buffet became popular around the start of the 19th century and made its way to America around the time of the 1939 New York World’s Fair

Today, almost anything goes on a buffet as one national chain now offers cotton candy and a chocolate fountain almost side by side as if asking all 10 year olds to partake of a cotton candy sundae after their 3rd trip to the buffet.

If you have a favorite buffet place leave a comment or send me a tweet @JohnRancke

  2. Shuler’s Barbecue, In Latta, SC, just off I95 just before the NC line, has an excellent buffet. Another good one is Bill’s Barbecue, a few miles off I95 in Wilson, which features a whole hog every day. Both are worth a drive from Lumberton, and you stand a good chance of not falling asleep while driving home after overeating.

    1. Had a Boston Butt from Shuler’s twice since Christmas
