#CokerCollege @Coker_Cobras @hartsvillesc @NCAAII @ICHOSEdivision2 March 7

I started the Coach4aday blog in 2014 and have done daily posts on one topic for each year. In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and in 2017 it was “Colleges and Universities”.
The one consistent piece of feedback I have received with this blog is the 2015 series on “A Friend of a Friend”. Readers and blog followers said please bring it back. The stats also back that up with the number of views each of those posts received.
So in 2018 two things will happen with the Coach4aday blog; One I plan to collaborate with a friend named John Rancke and revisit some of those 2015 “A Friend of a Friend” posts and do some new ones with a slightly different twist. I write the posts on odd numbered days each month and John handles the even numbered days.
In addition John and I will write about things we both are interested which will include basketball, food, people, music, our granddaughters, and great stories.
If you want to follow the blog via email go to the bottom right of the post and click the follow button.
My twitter handle is @coach4aday2 if you want to follow the blog that way.
John’s twitter handle is @JohnRancke if you want to reach out to him.

The Hall of Famer-Tim Griggs

Parts of this post were published on March 4, 2015 but has been updated and edited.

A good friend of mine Tim Griggs, was a former Director of Athletics at Coker College, in Hartsville, SC. Tim was my unofficial NCAA mentor when I served on a number of NCAA leadership committees from 2008-2013. One of our committee meetings took us to Colorado in 2011 and Tim introduced me to a beer I had never had or heard of at the time called Fat Tire. It was an Amber Lager brewed by New Belgium Brewery located in Fort Collins, Colorado.

New Belgium prides itself on being wind powered and employee owned and has opened a second brewery near Asheville, NC.

In 2011 the NCAA sent Tim and I along with a few others on a trip to Golden CO. We were there to see Golden mimic an idea that Tim created in Hartsville SC at Coker called “Taste of Coker”.

Photo below shows Tim and I in the center of a Golden Welcoming Group. We were attending a Thursday night  event on the campus of the Colorado School of the Mines.

Tim Griggs was more than an Athletic Director at Coker he also was the soccer coach at the now NCAA Division II university. I keep up with Tim via Facebook and he has shared with me his great pride in having his 1994 Women’s Soccer Team inducted into the Coker Hall of Fame.

Led by head coach Tim Griggs, the 1994 women’s soccer team compiled a 15-1-1 record. The Cobras finished No. 4 in the NAIA final rankings, and were ranked in the NAIA top 20 every week of the regular season. They won the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship for the second consecutive season, recording a 6-0 record in league play. During the season Coker had a 14-match winning streak, outscored opponents 61-12, posted 11 shutouts and won both the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Tournament and the Tennessee Wesleyan College Tournament.

Five Cobras from that 1994 team were named all-conference players: Crystal McCamis, Jamie Condon, Liz Gray, Kristi McHale and Stephanie Sorrells. Gray, McCamis, Condon and McHale were NAIA Mid-South All-Region selections. In addition, McCamis was named an All-American and the conference player of the year. My buddy Tim Griggs was the conference’s coach of the year.
In addition to coaching the women’s team, Griggs also coached the men’s soccer team and served as athletic director at Coker from 1994 to 2010. He coached the men from 1980-1994 and the women from 1988-1998. Griggs retired from the college in 2010.
Today he is a successful farmer in Hartsville, SC. He has a beautiful wife and two daughters.

The honors don’t stop just with his Women’s Soccer Team. On Saturday February 10, 2018 Tim was inducted into the Coker College Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach, athletic director, faculty member, and community advocate.

Tim helped transition Coker from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. He created five new athletic programs at the college — men’s and women’s cross country, competitive dance and cheerleading, and women’s golf. During his tenure several Coker teams earned national, regional and conference success. Two teams and two individual athletes advanced to the NCAA National Tournament, 21 teams advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament, and 15 teams won conference championships.

One of Tim’s more unique experiences was in 1994 when he worked with the World Cup. Tim  assisted Hank Steinbrecher, the secretary-general of the United States Soccer Federation. While working with the World Cup Griggs met many dignitaries, including former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
A native of Hartsville, SC Tim was instrumental in Coker’s involvement in the community, including the Taste of Coker, which became a national example of a successful community engagement event for all of NCAA Division II.

Congrats Tim on being recognized what I knew a long time ago-you are a Hall of Famer, Leader, and great friend.
