#MothersDay May 13

I started the Coach4aday blog in 2014 and have done daily posts on one topic for each year. In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and in 2017 it was “Colleges and Universities”.

The one consistent piece of feedback I have received with this blog is the 2015 series on “A Friend of a Friend”. Readers and blog followers said please bring it back. The stats also back that up with the number of views each of those posts received.

So in 2018 two things will happen with the Coach4aday blog; One I plan to collaborate with a friend named John Rancke and revisit some of those 2015 “A Friend of a Friend” posts and do some new ones with a slightly different twist. I write the posts on odd-numbered days each month and John handles the even-numbered days.

In addition John and I will write about things we both are interested which will include basketball, food, people, music, our granddaughters, and great stories.
If you want to follow the blog via email go to the bottom right of the post and click the follow button.

My twitter handle is @coach4aday2 if you want to follow the blog that way.
John’s twitter handle is @johnrancke if you want to reach out to him.

My Mom-Patricia Lynch Kenney

Today is Mother’s Day and everyone’s mom is special including mine.

My mom Patricia Lynch Kenney was born in 1926 and passed away in 2012 at the age of 85. She was a nurse, a wife for 39 years, and a loving mother to six children. She was a grandmother to another 14.

Photo below shows my mom with 10 of her 14 grandchildren in 2003. My mom is back row second from right.

My mom was the youngest of six siblings and her parents were Henry and Bridget Bambrick Lynch.

My mom grew up in Far Hills, NJ and went to school in Bernardsville, NJ-she graduated from Bernards High School in 1944. She got married in 1952 to my dad Francis D. Kenney.

After the wedding my parents lived in Far Hills NJ next to the train station until there was a fire in November 1953. After the fire they moved to a rental house in Morristown NJ on 114 Maple Ave.

We lived on bottom floor and someone was on second floor. We lived there for almost 4 years.

In 1957 we moved into the home that my grandfather owned in Morristown. The reason  was mom had just given birth to child number four my brother Tom.

My grandfather John Joseph Kenney sold the house to my dad and mom. My grandfather moved into the vacated 1st floor that we had left on 114 Maple Ave. where he lived until he passed away.

The house on 11 Lake Road where  I grew up in and where my mom lived for 40 years is shown below.

There are a lot of wonderful things about my mom that I could share but I am going to focus on four:

One; she was a woman of tremendous spiritual conviction and was a devout Roman Catholic. My mom went to her grave disappointed that none of her sons became a priest.

Kenney Brothers Patrick-Tom-Dan from February 2012-none of us became priests.

Two; my mom was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage and culture. Going to New York City for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, listening to Irish music, and when the Jameson’s or Irish Sherry kicked in she could be found doing an Irish Jig. Anything related to Ireland became happy moments for my mom and her four sisters.

Third; she had three special days in the month of May. She was born in May, she was married in May, and she loved the Kentucky Derby. It just so happens she was married on May 3, 1952 which was the day of the 78th running of the Kentucky Derby. That year the race was won by Hill Gail.

Horse racing was important to my mom because her dad Henry Lynch was the greatest show horse jockey in Ireland in the early part of the 1900’s. His ability as a jockey allowed him to come to America to ride horses. Once he was in the US he met my grandmother Bridget Bambrick and they lived in Far Hills and Peapack, NJ.

Fourth; my mom was a saint. My youngest sister Mary Frances was born in 1963 with Downs Syndrome and as an infant contracted rheumatic fever which caused her to go  deaf. My dad died in 1991 and my mom was the primary caregiver to my sister Mary Frances up until my mom died in February 2012.

There has never been a mom with a more loving heart than Patricia Lynch Kenney. Miss you Mom!  Happy Mother’s Day!
