Understand and Explaining Cousins
As the summer approaches it is a reminder it is a busy time for family reunions all across the country.
Growing up in New Jersey I was blessed to be around a lot of first cousins. My mom’s side of the family in fact gave me close to 20 first cousins. My dad’s side of the family was a little light with just 3 first cousins.
After I got married my wife started telling me about people who might be her second cousins or first cousins once removed. I don’t know about you but that has always been confusing to me. So I went searching for some simple answers
I found a chart and video that helped me a little. I now know that I have a bunch of 1st cousins once removed and even some 1st cousins twice removed. I also have two grand nieces and one grand nephew.
Some other clarifications “aunt” and “uncle” are used to refer to:
Your parents’ siblings
Their spouses
Additionally, “niece” and “nephew” are used to refer to:
Your siblings’ children
Your spouse’s sibling’s children
Have a great day cuz!
