August 28, 2018 More Quotes to Live Life from Coach Smith
This past weekend in Chapel Hill more than 200 former basketball lettermen (players and managers) gathered to do two things. To once again keep the Family Bond strong no matter the age (young and old) and to give thanks for the opportunities we were given by the University of North Carolina and the basketball program. One of those opportunities was the association with Coach Dean Smith and his life teachings OFF the court. This association still runs through the program for all those more recent players and managers that missed being taught by Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge.
Head Coach Roy Williams continues many of the teachings that Coach Smith passed on to us about life. The basketball court in The Dean E Smith Student Activities Center was dedicated to Roy Williams this weekend in front of so many of Coach Smith’s and Coach William’s former players. It was a private affair open only to those fortunate to come up through the program. Tears were shed by most as Roy was moved and talked about the man that gave him the opportunity and instilled a way of life into so many of us.
Ten quotes by Coach Dean Smith that deal with LIFE and Basketball

“The presidents of colleges have to have some courage to step forward. You can’t limit alcohol in college sports, you have to get rid of it.”

“The best way to stop the problem of agents would be for the NCAA to come down hard and suspend a school for two years if it finds players with agents on campus.”
“I’d like to see the high schools put in a rule that limits recruitable athletes from playing on AAU teams outside a 100-mile radius from their home or school.”
“I just think we shouldn’t get into counting coaches’ records. I’ve never been for that… but I know that’s just American society.”
