NFL Season-The Carolina Panthers
Today at 4:25 p.m. the Carolina Panthers will take on the Dallas Cowboys to open the 2018 N.F.L. Season. The Panthers played their first game on September 3, 1995 and I got to witness that franchise’s history unfold. I will also be in attendance today with some great friends.
The Panthers lost their first game to Atlanta Falcons 23-20 in Overtime and went on to post a record of 7-9 in their first season.
In 1995 the Panthers first season they used the campus of Winthrop University in Rock Hill SC as their offices, mini-camp site, and practice facility during the regular season. In 1995 I was the head basketball coach so I got to see a lot of what they did up close and personal. I even occasionally got to jog with GM Bill Polian and some of the coaches. I wish I could say that Winthrop was a first class facility for NFL players but it left a lot to be desired but they only had to endure it for one year before they moved to Ericsson Stadium which is now called Bank of America Stadium. The name changes in 2004.
There is a great story on SI website about the 1995 Panther season.
If you are a fan of history and the Panthers read the SI story.
One of the things that I do remember about the Panthers was the attention to detail that Head Coach Dom Capers and his staff put in. I also cherish the game ball that Bill Polian presented to me at the end of their first season when they moved out of the Winthrop Coliseum. The organization wanted to thank a basketball coach who allowed a NFL team to share a facility with them. It never was a bother because they were so classy.
Pulling for the Panthers today and all year long.
