Leadership
All of Eastern North Carolina has been impacted by the wrath of Hurricane Florence. There are so many people demonstrating compassion, concern, and empathy. There are also those that have demonstrated leadership.
Last night I went to dinner with my wife and a number of friends at a local restaurant. Joining us in the restaurant was Danny Britt along with his wife Jill. Danny happens to be Robeson and Columbus County (NC) North Carolina State Senator Danny Britt.
Will get the political disclosure out of the way early. I wrote about Danny and his wife Jill back in 2015. You can read that post here. I am a friend of Danny, I attend church with Danny, and he presented me with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine when I retired from UNC Pembroke in February. (photo below of Danny, myself, and UNC Pembroke Chancellor Robin Cummings). None of that changes the facts that Danny is a leader.
Over the past week he has been boots on the ground in dealing with so many aspects of the storm. Here is one video of what he has been doing
He put aside his business and family during this period. He has not been concerned about the fallout from using political capital to get resources to people in need. He has made sure that the basics have been addressed to those have been displaced or are in need of a hot meal. He has been a servant leader.
Even before the storm he was attempting to shore up a weak point along the CSX railroad tracks in Lumberton NC that had been the source of much of the floodwater that entered the city during Matthew. You can read about that in a Raleigh News and Observer story here.
There are a lot of Danny Britt’s out there who aren’t elected officials and I am glad that those are the people that make up my community. I saw that first hand yesterday volunteering to serve meals at Hyde Baptist Church. I saw people of all races, creeds, and colors helping others. I got to witness the power of religious organizations like NC Men & Women’s Disaster Relief who can mobilize quickly and help people.
I am happy that Danny is my State Senator. It is not enough but THANK YOU not only from me but from many including the folks below.
