Gifts I Received from Hurricane Florence
It has been a full week since Hurricane Florence has left North Carolina. There is still much devastation, pain, and sorrow left in her wake. I started to reflect on a difficult question did the storm present me with any gifts? The answer was yes. I know I received two big ones in particular.
First is the gift that people are truly kind.
Yes you can find all kind of stories about how evil some people can be in these situations but the best in people often comes out in the worst of times. I have witnessed simple and enormous acts of kindness the past week. I have seen people faced with enormous personal challenges but still looking to serve others first. I have seen organizations turn their focus from generating a profit to helping others. I have seen first responders-lineman-DOT employees-health care providers put aside fatigue and frustrations and still be kind. The challenge to accepting this gift of kindness is to trust that quality lies inside of people. It is amazing what you find when you look for it. This week I have looked for kindness and found it aplenty. What a gift.
Second is a reminder on what the most important possessions in our lives really are. If we have our faith, family, friends, and our health after the storm we are still wealthy.
We may have lost our homes, cars, personal possessions, and even businesses but would you trade those for the gifts of faith, family, friends, and health The answer for me is no.
Having those things is a gift and it took Florence to remind me I am okay.
