Each year the blog takes on a different focus. In 2019 the goal is for each post to bring you the reader a lesson, quote, message, or story that can help you grow.

Coachable

There is a quote by Jim Rohn that talks about reasons that cause a person to change.

“We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.”

My experience and opinion is sadly for most of us change occurs because of desperation. I often weave into conversations I have about mentorship and leadership development the saying “When the pupil is ready the teacher always arrives”.

For many of us to change we need guidance from a coach or mentor. So what does it take for the pupil to be ready? In essence what qualities do you have to possess to be coachable?

Here are some to think about:

Are you humble? Here is a link by Stan Toler that will give you six traits to work on towards humility.

Are you proactive? You must take responsibility for your life and actions if you are ready for change DON’T WAIT

Are you willing to let someone else be in charge? –It is not easy to place total trust in someone else to help guide us but that is important. That trust means you are going to be uncomfortable. That means accepting feedback without getting defensive. That means being mature.

Are you a person of faith? The word faith has lots of different contexts. Yes it can be helpful to have spiritual faith but what I am referring to is that you believe change is possible. You will have doubts and setbacks but having the faith to persevere is key. It is the ability to be self-reflective and believe you will change without giving up.

Here is a video to help you realize the importance of coachability by John Maxwell
