Each year the blog takes on a different focus. In 2019 the goal is for each post to bring you the reader a lesson, quote, message, or story that can help you grow.

Ascension

Words have different meanings. Ascension can describe a rise thru the ranks, the rising of a star or planet above the horizon, or the bodily rising of Jesus into heaven.

Each definition is worthy of a post but I want to focus on the first definition “rising thru the ranks”

ascension

Success often means taking on naysayers or people who don’t think you have any chance of succeeding. In college athletics that often means being part of a team without the benefits of a scholarship. To many the term walk-on is a stigma but the fact is on all NCAA teams the majority of college athletes are actually walk-ons, not scholarship athletes.

Part of that reason is NCAA Division III does not award scholarships but even in NCAA Div. I a large number of athletes walk on. Football at FCS level only permits 85 scholarships and rosters sometimes hover near 125.

Trying out for a team or walking on is the bottom rung of being on a team. You are hoping to gain acceptance and earn the opportunity to compete. The majority of walk-on athletes end up quitting before they are done with their eligibility. Yet there are many who possess persistence, work ethic, and belief in themselves that rise to the top.

Unbeknownst to me there is an yearly award in college football for the NCAA DIV I FSC Football Player who is deemed most outstanding but began their career as a walk-on.

The award is called the Burlsowrth Trophy

If you want to read stories about people who strated as walk-on and went on to great heights in their careers check out the bios of the following Burlsworth Trophy winners:

Brandon Burlsworth

Austin Davis

Justin Hardy

Baker Mayfield

Hunter Renfro

The thing with ascension is you have to start somewhere and then go to work to make your dream become a reality.
