Women
Today at UNC Pembroke two exceptional women are retiring-Marla Locklear and Nancy Crouch. Both are leaders because they know how to serve others.
(l-r) Nancy Crouch and Marla Locklear
Sometimes when I am exercising or driving I hear a new song come up on my Discover Weekly Playlist from Spotify. That new song has lyrics that make me think about leadership.
That happened two weeks ago on a 3 mile hike on a cold January morning. It made me think of the exceptional leadership capabilities of women especially Nancy and Marla.
Here are the first 3 verses of the lyrics:
Way back when
In the beginning of time
Man made the fire then the wheel
Went from a horse to an automobileHe said, “the world is mine”
He took the oceans and the sky
He set the borders – built the walls
He won’t stop till he owns it allAnd here we are
Standing on the brink of disaster
Enough is enough is enough is enough
I know the answer
The first three verses are followed up by the chorus found below
Put a woman in charge
Put a woman in charge
Put the women in charge
Put the women in charge
Put a woman in charge
Put a woman in charge
Put the women in charge
Put the women in charge
The song is called “Put a Women in Charge” and is performed by Keb’Mo and Rosanne Cash.
Roasanne is the oldest daughter of the late Johnny Cash-photo below from the 1950’s
Keb’Mo is a blues artist that has won 4 Grammys.
The song was released in November just after the historic number of women elected to congress. Often times women are overlooked but my experiences is often a women is the right choice for a leadership skills not because of gender but because of the results she gets with the team she is serving.

Thanks Nancy and Marla – I think Keb’ Mo and Rosanne Cash were singing about you.
