Each year the blog takes on a different focus. In 2019 the goal is for each post to bring you the reader a lesson, quote, message, or story that can help you grow.
We all encounter delays in our lives. Traffic delays, airline delays, school delays, and for many delays in achieving our goals.
If you research traits of successful people I am quite certain you will find that they have learned the importance of “DELAYED GRATIFICATION”. They understand putting off something now is the path to gaining something later.
The trait of delayed gratification shows up in research on successful people in many areas educational achievement, building wealth, addiction recovery, and just experiencing happiness.
Teaching patience is difficult because it does involve dealing with short term pain and discomfort. Practicing delayed gratification will also force you to experience not being satisfied which is not pleasant.
There is a long list of things that can bring us instant gratification and it would include food, drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, and credit card purchases. Those choices become a band-aid for our discomfort but they are never a long term cure or recipe for achieving worthwhile goals.
The important takeaway for me is if you cave in to every desire for pleasure it becomes almost impossible to have purpose. Purpose is key to achieving meaningful success. Delayed gratification is foundation for people that go on to achieve their long term goals.
