Each year the blog takes on a different focus. In 2019 the goal is for each post to bring you the reader a lesson, quote, message, or story that can help you grow.

When I retired I wrote my colleagues a letter telling them one of the reasons was I was taking on a new career with a fancy TITLE. I jokingly said I accepted an offer to be a G.A.S in our area. G.A.S stands for GRANDDAUGHTER ACTIVITY SPECIALIST.

I have a friend that worked hard all his life at a number of different jobs including being a basketball coach. Today he is retired does an envious amount of traveling and has given himself a TITLE. See my friend is not retired he is the DIRECTOR OF NAPPING.

He won’t let societal pressure define him as retired

I don’t want to exaggerate the number of resumes I reviewed in my life because this post is going to be about embellishment of TITLES. Let’s say I saw thousands. It really amused me what some people’s TITLES were in comparison to the actual work they did.

Here you go

  • Once I was reviewing resumes for a marketing position at a university. One of the applicants who was unemployed at the time referred to himself as former Chief Innovation Officer
  • For an administrative assistant position someone in her cover letter called herself the Director of First Impressions she worked at front desk in admissions office at a university.
  • A young recent college grad was working for temp employment agency doing part-time work. They referenced themselves On-Demand Executive
  • Another unemployed person at the time for applying for Graphic Designer position at the university listed current job as Independently Contracted Free Lance Graphic Designer

Then there are the TITLES that sometimes are longer than the work people actually do. I won’t name the university but one campus actually has a policy on adopting a long title for faculty members. Some of the policy basically states:

One unnamed university provides the ability to assign a” Long Title” for each job, which can be used to more specifically reflect the duties of the employee beyond what the standard job description covers reflect the duties of the position.

So in a work environment that is all about education they actually encourage long titles. In my career I have seen long impressive titles. I have run into Vice Presidents for Campus Engagement, Leadership, and Global Interaction; Director of Research, Innovation, and Grants; Director of Analytics and Logistics; and Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Clinical Data Researcher; Community Concierge; and finally University Operation Research Analysis Manager.

I am convinced that being called by any of our long TITLES won’t be as powerful as being called a dad , a mom, or especially a grandfather. To my granddaughter I am just “Ops” short for pops. That’s the only TITLE I need to feel validated.
