A couple of Saturdays ago a group of about 20 couples got together in Myrtle Beach SC and had a POOL party. This was no ordinary backyard POOL or any ordinary get together. Here is our group on the steps to the pool in front of the outdoor sports bar.
The commonality for all that attended was friend that lived in Myrtle Beach but worked in North Carolina at UNC Pembroke. His name was Steven Bourquin and he died last September. He had lots of friends a group from were from Myrtle Beach SC that hosted the party and a group from Lumberton NC that attended the event. The POOL party brought us all together.
(l-r) Steven Bourquin, Stephanie Bourquin, and myself the night in 2014 Steven got promoted to full professor at UNCP.
The event at this backyard POOL a fundraiser for a scholarship named in his honor at UNC Pembroke. Steven and his wife Stephanie were great friends with a couple from Myrtle Beach named David and Adrienne Ruffner. They and a number of Myrtle Beach friends agreed to host a Pool party and it was an auction item at UNC Pembroke Cash Bash.
We got a group of 12 couples from North Carolina who all adored Steven and made the winning bid on the POOL party. All the proceeds from our bid went to Steven D. Bourquin Endowed Scholarship at UNCP.
I have a picture of David and Adrienne below and what they have done to their backyard POOL is phenomenal. They over the past seven or eight years have taken a residential backyard and transformed it into what they call St. Ruff’s Caribbean Resort. More amazing is David has done most of the work with the help of friends. They have every right to call it a resort based on what we experienced one afternoon with them.
Here is what we experienced. They have a Tiki -hut swim-up bar, outdoor theater with fabulous seating, stage for live music, a restroom, and a sports bar all adjacent to their pool. Everything you see below is in their backyard surrounding their POOL.
A POOL is a small body of water but this POOL may have been small in stature but was large in amenetities. More importantly the people gathered around this POOL cared about the legacy of a friend.
Will never forget this POOL , the reason we came, and the great time we had celebrating a friend.
