Appreciation
APPRECIATION is a an important part of keeping any relationship strong.

Out of the clear blue two weeks ago I heard from a former colleague. He wanted to use me as a sounding board on why he was losing his zest and excitement for life. That was concerning because he has always been a positive and high on life leader. We talked for an hour and followed that up with conversations over the next two days.
As I listened it was clear to me that my friend was feeling a lack of APPRECIATION. Changes in organizational hierarchy had in his mind diminished his significance.
He knew he was competent and compensated well but did not feel validated or appreciated. He had his dream job and two weeks ago he was considering leaving.
If he does leave I suspect he will be difficult to replace. The troubling thing is APPRECIATION or in this case the lack of it may cause him to seek employment elsewhere.
In the book How Full Is Your Bucket the authors point out the #1 reason the US Department of Labor say people leave their job is they don’t feel appreciated. It is not money but a feeling that they are important that keeps employees, volunteers, or team members engaged.

If you lead a team you need to realize that genuine APPRECIATION is a secret weapon. It will increase loyalty, productivity, and transform your team.
The lack of APPRECIATION can cause a whole host of problems including losing a talented and gifted team member all because they are not being recognized and validated. If you are a leader there may not be a better holiday gift then provide your team with APPRECIATION.
