I have been to two outlet malls during the pandemic and have observed an interesting phenomena. COVID in a number of states has restricted customer capacity inside of stores. When a retail establishment reaches the max number of people inside a line forms at the front door.

This was not uncommon early on during the pandemic as this story in the Maui News points out. Notice the picture of Bath and Body Works in the story because those types of lines is what I am observing by Americans apparently buying CANDLES.

The two longest lines I have recently observed were at Bath and Body Works apparently because they were having a weekend BOGO on 3 wick CANDLES

I am very perplexed and very happy at the same time. I am happy because Meloria Malcolm works very hard at a Bath and Body Works. I am happy that her business is booming.

I am perplexed as a man on why Americans need so many CANDLES? Are we concerned that nuclear winter is just around the corner and everything is about to go dark?

I usually can turn to few of my male trivial subject matter experts like John Rancke, John Tanner, Judge Greg Bell, and Jeff Neelon but my hunch is they are just as clueless as I am.

Here are some CANDLE Facts that were enlightening (did anyone catch that).

I discovered the average length of burning time for a CANDLE length at Goose Creek Candle.

Prior to the pandemic CANDLE sales were in excess of 3 Billion Dollars annually. My hunch is 2020 is going to be a fantastic year. Normally 35% of CANDLE sales occur around the Christmas Holidays.

There are 10,000 different marketed scents available in CANDLES in the US. Some of the scents include Turkey and Dressing, Bacon, Campfire Marshmallow, Peach Lemonade, and whole host of scents for a Man Cave. Why would any man need a Man Cave Scented CANDLE to make his Man Cave smell like a Man Cave? Tony Jenkins is there a Man Cave scented CANDLE in your Man Cave? I don’t think so.

Americans favorite CANDLE purchases are containers and jars.

To produce all the CANDLES America buys each year we need 1 Billion pounds of wax.

Research on where customers burn their CANDLES also has me wondering. The top 3 locations in the home CANDLES are utilized are 1.The living room (42%), 2. The kitchen (18%) and 3 The bedroom (13%). The bathroom is not in the top 3? Not sure everyone is smelling (I meant telling) the truth here.

Some of these CANDLES will burn for 150 hours.

One closing thought. Every year on the first Saturday of December Bath & Body Works’ celebrates CANDLE Day.  Get there early or get in line.
