NCAA sports being played this month is a trickle in comparison to what we would normally see this time of year. That means missing out on all the mascots and nicknames.

I had a doctor appointment yesterday in Pinehurst NC and Dr. Timothy Flynn and I talked about the unique nickname that UC Santa Cruz chose. Santa Cruz the alma mater of a dynamic entrepreneur and leader named Tina Prevatte Levy.

Tina is co-founder of Firsthand Foods.

The Santa Cruz nickname is the “Banana Slugs”.

Does anyone know what NCAA School has the nickname GORLOCKS?

My first inclination when I hear the word GORLOCK is to to think of someone with a very large head.

The college with the unique nickname began in 1915 as Loretto College it was one of the first Catholic women’s colleges west of the Mississippi River. It was progressive for its time, providing higher education to women.

In 1967 recognizing the potential for sustainable growth and to deliver high-quality education to a broader population of underserved students, this college became a secular institution and the first Catholic college to transfer administration to a lay board.

In 1983 the name changed of this college to Webster University. One year later in 1984 the school really did something to make it unique. It made up a nickname for its athletic teams.

The Webster University Gorlocks

The GORLOCK is Webster University’s mascot. It is a mythical creature designed in part by Webster students and staff through a school contest.

The name “GORLOCK” was derived from the combination of two streets that intersect in the heart of Webster Groves, Missouri, where Webster’s main campus is located – Gore and Lockwood avenues.

The name was chosen in June 1984 by a campus committee that considered many suggestions and voted several times before settling on the unusual nickname. Since the GORLOCK is an invented mascot it has the paws of a cheetah, the horns of a buffalo and the face of a St. Bernard.

Webster University is a member of NCAA Division III. Notable alumni include my favorite NFL prognosticator Rob Riggle who earned a M.P.A from Webster in 1997.

Let me know if you see a GORLOCK anytime soon.
