Weekend
One of the first things I learned about being retired was that everyday felt like Saturday with the exception of Sunday. My life beginning in 2018 became a series of WEEKEND days. No weekdays just 6 Saturdays every week.

I have been hearing and reading from a number of people that the pandemic and the decision to quarantine has killed the WEEKEND. In fact the NY Times right after Labor Day did an article “On How The Quarantine Killed the WEEKEND”. This WEEKEND is the 33rd in a row that events and schedules for almost everyone has been altered.
I am glad that retirement made me realize and recognize that the biggest challenge is establishing a new schedule. I received excellent guidance from books and colleagues that planning to be retired is much more than finances. Many people spend all their preparation time for retirement fretting over finances. The more important reality is to think realistically about how you will spend your new founded time.
For what it is worth the two biggest daily challenges I see for retirees is to keep learning and creating a new purpose driven schedule. That is a new challenge for those not retired forced to deal with the upheaval from COVID.
The decision to create a new schedule in retirement seems to have me better equipped for the changes from the pandemic to WEEKENDS.
The pandemic has become a schedule wrecker to those who now work from home.
The routine of commuting along with other scheduling events disappears. Humans need some kind of structure to the day and week. For many enduring that routine and grind during the week was rewarded by getting to the WEEKEND where you could unwind.
I encourage anyone who feels like their WEEKEND has disappeared to find creative ways to replicate the pre-pandemic WEEKEND routines you had. Saturday Night Live offered up some tips a couple of weeks ago when Carrie Krum gave America some tips on vacations and WEEKENDS.
If Carrie (Aidy Bryant) doesn’t help all I can offer up is Wet Willie singing about what WEEKENDS were and will eventually become again.
