Beer Can Chicken

Last week I wrote a post on improvements I have seen in my lifetime. Those reflections garnered feedback both online and in person. Several people chastised me for things that I left off the list.

Yoga pants, metal woods, music streaming, and cable TV were all mentioned to me as grievous omissions. Last Sunday I decided to do a BEER CAN CHICKEN on the grill before we left for church. As I navigated the morning rain on my walk from the kitchen to my Weber Genesis II-310 Grill I realized the BEER CAN CHICKEN holder I purchased has made my life easier as a backyard chef.

Prior to purchasing the holder I would have to use the chicken legs and a beer can to form a triangle base to roast my chicken.

Sometimes the chicken’s anatomy and my attempts at geometry didn’t quite balance the bird just right. I was always dealing with chicken that was falling over. Some people actually call the recipe “Drunken Chicken” and I suspect having their chicken fall over on the grill may be the reason for that moniker.

The holder solved that problem as my chickens now have great balance and footing and never fail a field sobriety test. Here are two chickens that I finished using the holders.

Here is my complex recipe to cook BEER CAN CHICKEN.


  1. One whole chicken
  2. 4-3–2-1 Dry rub
  3. Olive oil
  4. (1) 12 oz. can of beer


Get grill to 325 degrees

Take your whole chicken out of packaging. If it comes with liver and neck be sure to remove from inside cavity of chicken. Remove any excess skin. Pat dry with paper towels. Lightly coat skin with olive oil. Season chicken well inside and out with 4-3-2-1 Dry Rub.

Open a 12 oz. can of beer. Remove half of the liquid. Preferred method is to drink it.

Place 1/2 can of beer in your BEER CAN HOLDER. Place seasoned chicken on top of holder.

Place chicken in the holder on grill await from heat. Cook for 2.5 hrs. rotating chicken once. Desired internal temp should be 165 F in the thigh.
