When and how do you really START becoming a leader?
John Maxwell writes in one of his books that he often surveys participants in his leadership seminars about that question and he basically gets three responses.
1. 10% of those surveyed stated that it was a natural gift and they have always been a leader.
2. 5% stated that there was a crisis within their organization or family and they stepped into a leadership role.
3. 85% stated that they were influenced to become a leader by another leader.
I do believe firmly in two principles that involve the 85% of leaders who get influenced. One is the leader doing the mentoring has an abundance theory and two the size of a person leadership legacy is like a ship the bigger it is the larger the wake it leaves behind. Let me explain using coaching examples.
When great leaders believe in abundance they share their knowledge and spend time mentoring others to lead. When leader believe that serving others as a mentor it creates some magnificent legacies and success stories.
Bill Walsh directly touched the lives of 6 other NFL Coaches and those 6 went on to influence 13 other NFL Coaches. The second 13 went on to influence 13 more and that second group of 13 went on to influence 12 more NFL Coaches. One man Bill Walsh influenced 35 NFL Coaches either directly or indirectly and his coaching tree is still alive. When I look at the back of Bill Walsh’s Coaching Tree Ship I see a magnificence wake.
Below is the Coaching Tree of Bill Walsh
