Lessons
Reading can be a great teacher of many valuable life LESSONS.
I can quickly rattle off different lessons I have learned from reading. Here are a few of my favorite authors and books. I have also included a passage from each one.
Scott Peck-The Road Less Traveled
“Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult – once we truly understand and accept it – then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.”
Patrick Lencioni-The Ideal Team Player
The kind of people that all teams need are people who are humble, hungry, and smart. Humble being little ego; focusing more on their teammates than on themselves. Hungry, meaning they have a strong work ethic, are determined to get things done and contribute any way they can. Smart, meaning not intellectually smart but inner personally smart. They understand the dynamics of a group of people and how to say and do things and have a positive outcome on those around them.
Bible 1 Peter 4:10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
Shifting gears I have learned about life from listening to others talk about “LESSONS” they learned from reading.
While at UNC Pembroke I made friends with a number of faculty and staff members. One of those individuals was Professor of Physics Dr. Tim Ritter. Tim was the 2013 UNC Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award Winner. That honor meant he was UNC Pembroke Winter Commencement Speaker. In my new role as Chief of Staff I got to interact with many who were part of the commencement ceremony including Tim.

Today Tim is retired and courageously battling ALS. He lives in North Myrtle Beach SC. The way he lives his life is a lesson on how to appreciate each day and keep learning.
When Tim spoke at commencement he read from Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) book called “Oh The Places You Will Go”.
I have included his entire YouTube speech below but the message is really the last 10 minutes.
Life LESSONS from reading can be found in many places.
“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”
