Jim Collins author of the book “Good to Great” early in his professional life created a personal board of advisors.
One of the people he had was John Gardner who was Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare for President Lyndon Johnson.
On one occasion Jim said that Secretary Gardner gave him some valuable advice. He told him to:
“Quit trying to be interesting and start being INTERESTED in others.”

One of the key aspects of leading a team or group of people effectively is the ability to show genuine interest. That means not only appearing to care, but you really do need to listen to what people are saying. Listening and being INTERESTED is easier said than done.
One key to becoming skilled at being interested in others is to turn your total focus on that person. Having a phone, email, or another person distract you sends the message loud and clear you are not INTERESTED in what they have to say.
When you become INTERESTED in others the truth is you actually do become interesting because you care more about others than yourself.
