Shortages
Back in January when I decided to do twelve 30 Day Challenges I knew one month was going to involve baking. I didn’t realize that choosing the month of April would coincide with a number of baking supply SHORTAGES.
I choose baking because I want to learn something new. I also realized that as a society we all were guilty of going to the store to get baked goods. But with everybody in the U.S. under some form of stay-at-home due to COVID 19, it appears that it not just Jeff Neelon, Tina Bullard and I that are dusting off old recipes for breads, pastries, cookies, and cakes. Everybody jumped into the pool at the same time.
According to Nielsen grocery store sales data for the week ending March 28th has seen some dramatic spikes in the sale of baked good staples. Sales of baking yeast were up 457% over last year for that week., Flour was up 155%, baking powder up 178%, butter up 73% and eggs up 48%.
So it appears my challenge to the completing my 30 Day Challenge may be a SHORTAGE of supplies not a SHORTAGE of time.
With apologies to Atlanis Morissette isn’t that ironic.
An old man had time to bake
Just no ingredients anyhow or anyway
It’s a black fly in your Chardonnay
It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think
