Waypoints
I started out this morning with the intent to possibly update an older post of mine (April 2016) on North Carolina Water Towers. In doing that research I kept coming up with a term called WAYPOINTS. Part of the reason is that those towers can be WAYPOINTS.
I have heard of WAYPOINTS before but was not exactly sure what it meant. In the simplest of terms a WAYPOINT is a specific location. It has lots of practicality when utilizing GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. I did not know that GPS is owned and operated by the US Dept. of Defense.
GPS works thru a series of satellites receiving signals from all types of receivers. The satellites circling the earth can locate various WAYPOINTS.
GPS WAYPOINTS can be streets, places, establishments, even a statue (if it hasn’t been torn down in the past month).
There are currently 31 satellites in orbit as part of the GPS system. The satellites and your GPS receiver work together, to help you with directions.
Once the satellites receive a signal from your receiver, they do a process called trilateration. This happens when the three or four satellites that are within your location will pinpoint exactly where you are.
