Transform
If you lead a team you probably have encountered a dilemma. To get a group to improve or TRANSFORM it usually will require training, practice, repetition, and/or teaching.
When an individual or group is exposed to a speaker, learning exercise, or training they may evaluate it’s value solely on if it was entertaining. A danger to growth is a focus or desire to just be entertained when the real goal should be TRANSFORMATION.
This is a challenge for any teacher, coach, speaker, preacher, or subject matter expert because to change behavior it requires some discomfort on the part of the audience. Just being entertained often means escaping or avoiding the real issue that has to be addressed.
I admire many coaches, leadership speakers, and consultants. Edwin Britt is one who I place on that list. He is dynamic.
The best coaches like Edwin understand the pedagogy of getting an individual or group to change. The list includes enthuiasism, passion, trustworthiness, competency, and the ability to listen. All of those can be entertaining but underneath that veneer there has to be effort and persistence from individuals to change. Coaches that get results realize that accountability is better than applause or laughs.
I love the saying “When the Player is ready the Coach always appears”. The next time you are asked to participate in some type of training don’t fall prey to the mindset of I hope this is entertaining. Rather ask yourself how can this experience TRANSFORM me. .
