Queen Anne
Tomorrow for the 30 Day Photo Challenge the prompt is to have an architectural picture. Houses can come in many architectural styles. One in particular is called QUEEN ANNE. It is associated with the Victorian age of home design.
American QUEEN ANNE homes during this time were the most elaborate and the most eccentric. They grew in popularity during the 1880s and 1890’s. I live on a street in Lumberton, NC that has a house with Queen Anne architectural features. Currently the home continues to sit unoccupied and it has been that way for two decades. It is my hope that it might restored one day just not by me.
The QUEEN ANNE style lent itself to the excesses of the Victorian age with its turrets, oriel windows, and medieval influences. Beloved by lumber barons, railroad magnets, and industrialist tycoons alike, many of the countries largest and most spectacular homes of the early 20th century were QUEEN ANNE in style.
My home state of New Jersey has town on its southern tip called Cape May. The town is full of historic homes. In fact it has over 600 and it is a place should have on your travel bucket if you love home architecture. You can do a walking tour in Cape May.
I got to walk the streets of Cape May NJ one cold and blustery morning in January 2018. I was there to watch my son-in-law graduate from US Coast Guard Basic Training at the US Coast Guard Training Center. Here are two pics from my Cape May NJ walkabout that I took.
The Harper House in Hickory, NC is considered by the North Carolina Department of Archives and History to possess the “finest Queen Anne interior styling in the entire state”.

At the present time it is closed to visitors because of COVID.
Several notable families have occupied the Harper House. The Harper Family was the last of seven families to occupy the Shuler-Harper House, as some locals still refer to it. Daniel Webster Shuler, originally from Michigan and founder of Hickory’s first bank, built the house in 1887.
Curious if anyone else has a particular Queen Anne home they remember or have visited.
