A friend of a friend-Sharlene Locklear-Regenia Maynor-November 13

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for November 13, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

On Thursday night I got the privilege of serving as emcee for the Lumbeton City Council Farewell Dinner for four outgoing civic leaders. Those four that were honored included Mayor Ray Pennington, Councilmen Harry Ivey, Councilmen Robert Jones, and Councilmen Don Metzger.

In the audience were friends and families of the honorees. Also in attendance were two ladies that have not only served the university in an exceptional way but have provided me great support during my career. Each of them serves as Administrative Support Associate for UNC Pembroke. Each of them served during the time that Dr. Raymond Pennington served at UNC Pembroke as both chair of the HPER Department and Athletic Director. After serving for 16 consecutive years Dr. Pennington decided not to seek reelection this month.

The first lady name is Regenia Hardin Maynor. Regenia has been at UNC Pembroke for nearly 30 years and has served the university in a number of different capacities. For most of her career she worked with Sports Information and the Braves Club. In the spring of 2011 she moved over to the Bob Caton Fieldhouse where she has served as the Administrative Assistant for the UNCP Football Team.

Regenia has worked for a number of different supervisors at UNC Pembroke including Gary Spitler, Kevin Rhodes, Matt Sullivan, Abdul Ghaffar, Dom Donnelly, Pamela Mason, Rikki Cockrell, Todd Anderson, Pete Shinnick, and Shane Richardson. That is a lot of people and Regenia has always supported each and every one of them in a first class fashion. She truly loves UNCP.

Regenia has a son Tyler who is a member of the UNCP Football team and a daughter named Christian.

She is married to Gary Maynor who also is a big UNCP supporter.

Regenia has a number of friends at UNCP including Sharlene Locklear.

The Friend of the Friend-SHARLENE LOCKLEAR

Sharlene Locklear is going thru a big transition this year. The only HPER Chair she had every worked for retired. Tommy Thompson taught, coached and served as chairman of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department for 28 years. Most of that time was with Sharlene Ransom Locklear serving as his Administrative Assistant.

The HPER Chair and Athletic Director have a unique relationship at UNCP. They both share the same office suite. That shared arrangement also means their respective Administrative Assistants often have shared duties. Sharlene would often support me during the 15 years I worked as Athletic Director. She also supported Dr. Pennington who was the Athletic Director for 15 years before me.

Sharlene like her friend Regenia has a son and daughter that she is very proud of.

Today in my role as Chief of Staff I do not get to see Sharlene and Regenia on a daily basis. I do get to see their common friend Marla Locklear each day. The three of them could tell some stories on past and current coaches and HPER faculty. I just hope they keep them to themselves.
