My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Mars Hill University
Location: Mars Hill NC
I have a number of strong direct and indirect connections to Mars Hill University. All of those interactions did not educate me on the fact that Mars Hill was founded prior to the start of the Civil War and its name is tied to a passage in the Bible.
Mars Hill University was founded as the French Broad Baptist Institute in 1856. Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to Mars Hill College, inspired by Acts 17:22, which said, “Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill and said, ‘Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.’”
In August 2013, the institution changed its name to Mars Hill University, to reflect the institution’s expansion, both in terms of enrollment and variety of offerings.
Mars Hill is located in Madison County NC and is actually the largest town in the county. The county is one of the least populated in the state and in fact its 1900 census numbers were 20,644 and the 2010 census had the population at 20,764. In a 110 years the county has seen virtually no growth.
In doing research I came across some great photos of the school from the early 20th Century.
I have a friend that is a fixture at Mars Hill University in David Riggins. David has been at Mars Hill for nearly 30 years and serves as Athletic Director. He also is the winningest head men’s basketball coach in school history. Under his leadership the Mars Hill Lions have been a model NCAA Division II Athletic Program.
