Negativity
Every parent, teacher, coach, supervisor, pastor, spouse, and leader has had or will have NEGATIVITY issues to deal with. It comes from your children, team, employees, congregation, and maybe yourself. How do you deal with it?
It is not easy because it involves leadership actions that all are uncomfortable.
It is oversimplification but the advice of Jon Gordon is spot on.
In essence as a leader of a team you are doing three things to combat negative energy.
- Confront-you will not permit or tolerate NEGATIVITY
- Transform-members of the team cannot complain without offering one or two solutions to the negative situation. Understand that these suggestions may be debated and even cause conflict but if the conflict does not turn toxic it can help a team grow. Creating trust on a team that you can debate without one or both sides over grudging is the art of leadership.
- Remove-If a team member cannot transform after they have been confronted they need to be removed.
Jon Gordon wrote a book that every leader of a team should read called The Energy Bus
